Summer felt different when we were kids.
Maybe it's because we spent most of it outside. No smartphones. No GPS tracking. No group texts keeping everyone connected. We rode our bikes until the streetlights came on, drank water from the garden hose, and somehow always knew where our friends were without ever sending a single message.
A summer day could start with absolutely no plan and still turn into an adventure. There were baseball games in empty lots, trips to the swimming pool, camping in the backyard, and long evenings catching lightning bugs. The soundtrack was a mix of lawnmowers, cicadas, and whatever song happened to be playing on the radio.
Looking back, it wasn't that life was perfect. We just had a little more freedom to be bored—and boredom often led to the best memories.
Today, summer looks different for many of us. We're juggling careers, families, responsibilities, and schedules packed tighter than we ever imagined when we were kids. Yet every now and then, a familiar smell from a barbecue grill, the sound of an ice cream truck, or a warm breeze on a July evening takes us right back.
That's one of the gifts of being Gen X. We remember a world before everything was digital, and those memories have a way of making us smile.
I'd love to hear your summer stories. What was your favorite summertime tradition growing up? Did you have a favorite swimming hole, bike route, neighborhood game, or family vacation? Share your memories in the comments and let's take a trip back to summers that seemed to last forever. ☀️🚲🍉
